George Leslie Mackay
George Leslie Mackay, commonly known as Dr. Mackay, was born in 1844 in a Scottish immigrant family in Canada. He was determined to be an overseas missionary when he was just ten years old. He arrived at Tamsui in 1872 and decided to stay here and to missionize, doctor and educate. He learned Taiwanese, assimilated into the culture, married and settled here.
Oxford Collage
When Mackay returned to Canada in 1880, people of his hometown were happy with what he had achieved within these 8 years in Taiwan. After they heard him say “ … I was teaching students under the big banyan tree on the lawn and sheltered under the sky...” , they decided to launch a donation fund to build a modern school. Dr. Mackay named this school as ‘Oxford Collage’, a memorial to his hometown and to meet his promise to his people.
Mackay Mission Hospital
This is the first western hospital of the northern Taiwan. When it was rebuilt in 1879, there was still no name. Later when Mackay received a donation of USD 2500 from a woman named Mackay, the name was set. When the hospital moved to Taipei in 1912, its use has also changed. Now the garden is accessible for tourists, the building itself is only open for worship and scheduled activities.
Mackay Former Residence
This beautiful building is full of Southern European flavor. Mackay built it in 1875. He married here, had children here and also died here.
Bat-Chit-L'ut tree (bread fruit tree)
People of the A-mei tribe gave him a tree as a present when he went on his mission to Hualien in 1890. Mackay cherished it very much and planted it in his backyard. All the bread fruit trees you see around the Fort are from the original one.
Mackay Cemetery
Here is where Dr. Mackay lay after he died. Only his relatives and closest students could be buried here. Mackay’s tomb is the highest one, built by donations from his students. Its shape is like a candle holder.
